NORFOLK - Eloise S. Efird, 66, passed away in her home Dec. 30, 2009. She was a native of Portsmouth and was a retired secretary from the Portsmouth School System. She was predeceased by her parents, Harold P. and Vurneace H. Stephens; four brothers, Herbert "Toby" Stephens, Harold Stephens Jr., Tyrone Stephens and Dennis Stephens. Most treasured in her heart were her daughters, Lynnette Jones and husband Eric of Suffolk, Karen Melton of Norfolk and Barbara E. Kirby and husband John of Virginia Beach; and her grandchildren, Taylor, Paige, Johnny, Michael, Stephen and Katie. She is also survived by two sisters, Anne Dickens of Norfolk and Jenny Lind Stephens of Florida; lifelong friends, Judy Knott and Ruth Watts; and many loving nieces and nephews. Time shared with her family and friends was what she valued most. She was often known as the family historian. Among her many interests were music, theater, writing and avid book reading. She often volunteered at voting polls and loved playing bingo. She was a 1962 graduate of Cradock High School and attended some community college. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 9, at Oakland Christian Church in Suffolk at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Mark Burns presiding.
