Sam Gay

Sam Stein Gay Jr., 62, died Sept. 15, 2003. He was a native of Wilmington, N.C., and a former resident of Portsmouth.

He was a member of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, Churchland Masonic Lodge No. 276, Lake Drummond Masonic Lodge No. 178, Portsmouth-Chesapeake Scottish Rite Bodies, Mount Horib Royal Arch Chapter No. 11, past commander of the Portsmouth Commandery, Khedive Shrine Temple, York Rite and past patron of Victory Chapter No. 16 Order of the Eastern Star. Sam was a funeral director formerly of Loving & Gay Funeral Home in Portsmouth and currently employed with Echols Funeral Home in Emporia, Va.

Sam is survived by his wife, Anita B. Gay of Emporia; mother, Kate W. Gay of Roanoke, formerly of Portsmouth; a sister, Glyndal G. Partington and husband, David of Roanoke; two sons, Stephen S. Gay and wife, Lauren of Virginia Beach and Sam S. Gay III of Colonial Heights; three grandchildren, Jamie Christine, Mariah Elizabeth and Sean Scott Gay; and three nieces, Robin P. Foutz, Teri P. Nelson and Sarah J. Partington, all of Roanoke.

A funeral will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, by the Rev. Gary B. Manning. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery with Masonic Rites. The family will receive friends in the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
