VIRGINIA BEACH -- Syd Wendell Smith Jr., 61, died Nov. 29, 2001, in his residence. Mr. Smith was born in Portsmouth and was a self-employed tax accountant and bookkeeper. He was a 1958 graduate of Cradock High School and the University of Richmond.

Survivors include two daughters, Helen E. Smith and Wendy Bunn and husband David, both of Virginia Beach; a son, ``Trip'' Syd W. Smith III of New York City; two grandchildren, April and Elle Bunn, both of Virginia Beach; previous wife, Ann Smith of Virginia Beach; aunts and uncles, William and Maude Phelps of Virginia Beach, Alan and Rose Phelps of Baltimore, Md., and Calvin and Louise Phelps of Lynchburg, Va.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Kemspville Chapel, by the Rev. Bradley S. Dulaney. Burial will be private.

Syd was a popular student at Cradock, a football player on some of Cradock's finest teams, who had no enemies. He made friends wherever he went in life. All who knew him knew of his love of life and exuberance for it. He lived every moment to its fullest.

The family received friends at the funeral home following the service. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the American Heart Association, Davenport Circle, Virginia Beach, VA 23422 or Princess Anne Courthouse Volunteer Rescue Squad, Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23456.
