George John ''Jack'' Kahler Sr., loving father and grandfather, 70, of the 800 block of Cherokee Road, died Oct. 15, 2002, in a Norfolk hospital.
A native of Baltimore, he was a retired general contractor and a self-made architect. He was a member of Holy Communion Lutheran Church and was a former deacon of the church. He served in the U.S. Air Force.
Survivors include his wife, Leeanne Smith Kahler and their children, Andrea Kahler and Justin G. Kahler of Chesapeake; daughter, Kim Kahler Sykes and husband John R. III of Portsmouth, and son Jack Kahler Jr. and wife Rachel J. of Virginia Beach and their mother, Betty Daggett Kahler of Virginia Beach; two stepsons and their mother, Jerriann Suykerbuyk Kahler of Portsmouth; a sister, Peggy Kahler Phillips and husband Slade Phillips of Las Vegas, Nev.; a brother, Charlie Kahler of Virginia Beach; and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Holy Communion Lutheran Church by Dr. Dennis D. Buchholz. Entombment will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Mausoleum. The family will receive friends at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Holy Communion Lutheran Church or the American Kidney Foundation.
