Talton Monroe Benfield, 85, went to be with his Lord Monday, Aug. 29, 2016, at Wayne Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family.

Talton was born in Statesville, N.C., June 20, 1931, to the late Troy Monroe Benfield and Eula Mae Hobbs Benfield.

He lived his dream proudly serving his country in the United States Air Force. Talton protected his country and her allies during the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He retired in 1971 as a master sergeant.

Following his military career, Talton worked with Goldsboro Christian School, Franklin Baking Co. and later in security at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

He was a member of Faith Free Will Baptist Church.

Those of us who knew Talton weep at our loss, laugh with our remembrances and reflect deeply on how much he meant to us. He made the world a healthier and happier place.

The family will receive friends Friday, Sept. 2, 2016, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, followed by a service celebrating Talton’s life at 2 p.m. in the chapel, with the Rev. Christian Powell, the Rev. Walter Sloan and the Rev. John Sinkhorn officiating. Interment will conclude the service in Wayne Memorial Park with full military honors.

Talton is survived by his wife of almost 63 years, Catherine Kilpatrick Benfield; children, Donna Scharadin (James) of Goldsboro, Ronald Benfield of Goldsboro, Kerrie Mandeville (Paul) of Hampton, Va., and Deborah Benfield Breedlove (Thomas) of Goldsboro; sisters, Patricia and Imogene of Virginia; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Tony Monroe; brother, Darrell Benfield; and sister, Jackie Benfield.
