Doris Elizabeth Byers Register of the 5100 block of Portsmouth Blvd., died Saturday, March 27, 1999, in a Portsmouth hospital.

 

A native of Baltimore, she was a retired clerk/bookkeeper for the Portsmouth School Board, Instructional Resource Center, and previously worked for Seaboard Coastline Railroad. She was an active member at Cradock Presbyterian Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher; a volunteer at Portsmouth General Hospital, where she worked in the gift shop; a member of Women of the Moose Lodge No. 866 - O.E.S.; Miriam Chapter No. 94; Cradock Lions Club; Senior Bowling Friendship League; Beasley Senior Citizens; and Portsmouth Travel Club.

 

The widow of Joseph Thorton Register Sr., she is survived by a daughter, Carole West Prince, and her husband, Wayne, of Chesapeake; a stepdaughter, Judy Register Paw, and family; a stepson, Joseph T. Register Jr., and family; a sister, Helen Byers Ricketts, and her husband, Eddie, of Portsmouth; a sister-in-law, Jean Founds Byers of Chesapeake; two grandchildren, Laurel P. Andrews and her husband, Ryan, of Chesapeake and Christopher W. Prince of Virginia Beach; two great-granddaughters, Kelcey and Caelyn Andrews; and numerous loved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Eugene L. ``Buddy'' Byers and William F. ``Bill'' Byers.

 

A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in Cradock Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Richard Lovingood and Dr. David Denny. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery. An Eastern Star service will be held at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Boulevard Chapel, at 7 p.m. today, and the family will receive friends afterward until 8:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Cradock Presbyterian Church.
