Jacqueline Boykins Bempong

NORFOLK - On Feb. 12, 2003, Jacqueline Boykins Bempong, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, niece, cousin, friend and colleague, passed on to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Her son, Kwabena Alexander Bempong, preceded her in death on May 23, 1999.

She was the wife of Dr. Maxwell Alexander Bempong. She was a member of the graduating class of 1962, George P. Phenix High School, Hampton. She received degrees from Norfolk State College (B.S.), Hampton Institute (M.Ed.) and George Washington University (CAS) and additional graduate studies at Virginia Tech and Old Dominion University.

She was a faithful member of the Basilica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. At various times during her church membership, she was a member of the following church organizations: Gospel Choir, Ladies of Peter Claver, Women's Club, Worship Committee and the Altar Guild.

She became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. in 1966 and remained an active member of the Chesapeake/Virginia Beach Chapter.

Jacqueline was an educator with Portsmouth Public Schools as a social studies teacher and more recently with Chesapeake Public Schools as a counselor and guidance director. She was a kind, gentle, fun-loving, spirit-filled person who worked hard and who loved to give and to make others happy. She loved the Lord and prayed unceasingly for others as well as for herself.

She is survived by her mother, husband, son, Jeffrey Eugene Bempong and his wife, Jill, of Amarillo, Texas; two sisters, three brothers, two grandchildren and numerous other relatives and close friends who live throughout the East Coast.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at noon Tuesday in Basilica of St. Mary, 1000 Holt St., Norfolk. Graves Funeral Home, 1631 Church St., Norfolk, will be in charge. Please make donations to the Basilica of St. Mary Catholic Church. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, 8100 Granby St., Norfolk.
